Appetiser.
You may be wondering about the fat head. Me too.
I don't have much confidence in white-only fry imitations; this one has a bit of everything. Works well pulled behind a muddler on brightish days in August (if the fish are up), works great for targeting mid-water fly feeders. The *idea* here is to get your lures beneath the shoal and work your way up to the boat. This is a late July tactic. You'll know when it's the way to go because fish are chasing fry up but not herding them. The trick is to find the correct depth. This is the only time I use a Wet Cell II and I carry it explicitly for this purpose. Pay particular attention to the drop, the upward curving ascent and the hang.
Tying instructions:
size 10 long shank, white thread, tail and throat of olive, orange and grizzle hackles (I think the original is teal, if not teal then mallard - do I care?), white chenille body with silver rib, white marabou wing with squirrel overwing. If you inadvertently tie the fat head like mine, paint eyes and pretend it was intentional.
