Claret palmer.

I've fished two distinct sorts of early morning June rises on stillwaters (say that quickly). The first is best tackled with emergers; taking fish right off the top in about 6 inches of water, perhaps no more than a couple of feet from the edge. These fish are taking the previous night's shucks and spent flies. The other type of rise occurs when there's a slight ripple. These fish are taking buzzers inches below the film.

For these I'll fish a Soldier Palmer on the top, a Claret Palmer in the middle and an Olive Spider on the point.

Apart from this it's just a handy fly to have in your box, especially during September. There are times when you just can't beat wet flies.

Pretty nifty on rivers too of course.

Tying instructions:
size 14, claret thread, claret seal, furnace cock, mono rib.
