Hare's ear dry 12.

Yeah sorry about that. Not sure what I was thinking. This is a lake olive emerger sort of thing. A fantastic fly which fishes "damp" - which means it doesn't float so good. Notice the quite heavy hook, this ensures the "dampness at all times" effect.

A great fly when there are lake olives around, but actually it's just a great fly. In former days when I worked at Ardleigh, one of our regulars - who we called "Hare's ear" incidentally - only ever fished two flies. This was one, and the other was a longer shank version. So there you go; if you don't want to tie a hundred flies and would rather tie just one, then this is your baby. Good luck.

Tying instructions:
size 12 hook, a bit too heavy, yellow thread, hare's fur from mask and body, gold mylar rib - make sure it's really scruffy; use velcro.
