I know what you're thinking: you're thinking Paul's buggered up the hackling again. And you're right, but this time I did it intentionally. Sometimes the fish want the conventional hackle, mostly they want the buggered up one.
My best ever Hawthorne rise was one Ardleigh evening; it had been a bright windy day - the fish had lain deep - come evening, in one bay, we had one of the most spectacular rises I've yet to see, including plenty of overwintered rainbows. Back then hardly anyone fished dries on lakes because "it doesn't work", now everyone fished dries on lakes and so it doesn't work anything like as well as it once did.
Useful on rivers too of course.
