6th July '07 - Wets

OK over in BC, going to hit a lake tonight. So far the claret suspender nailed fish on one lake in Alberta and took a whitefish last night, very late. Hey it's still light here after midnight.. cool huh?

My most successful night fly is a plain black marabou fished just below the surface. I've been lake fishing this fly for 25 years and I've come to the conclusion that simplicity is the key.It also works superbly on slow moving rivers, after dark. Call it a leech if you want, originally a Bob Church pattern I believe tied to imitate burnt straw building cased caddis. It works and always has, that's all that matters. Fished slow figure-of-eight.

And now we need some wets. What better than a Soldier Palmer. An emerging midge pupa, maybe, it works everywhere... NZ, Montana, Europe.

And I was going to tie a black spider, but don't have the right materials. So here is a variation..

I'm feeling good about my box now. Need some more wets and then a bunch of river patterns.

Cheers.
